When you are considering fiber and your diet, it's important to remember that there are three different sources: fiber from foods, fiber from supplements and fiber therapy (bulk fiber laxatives).

Fiber therapy products -- as opposed to chemically stimulating laxatives -- are a safe, natural way to ensure regularity.

  • Some fiber supplements contain fiber such as wheat dextrin (Benefiber) or inulin (Fiber Choice and Fiber-sure). These help you to increase your overall dietary fiber intake, but they have not been evaluated by the FDA for the specific treatment, cure or prevention of any disease. They are available as powders, pills and chewable tablets. As with most soluble fiber, there is a chance that you will experience gas and bloating.
  • Fiber therapy products (sometimes referred to as bulk fiber laxatives) are a bit different because they have been evaluated by the FDA to be safe and effective in restoring and promoting regularity. Bulk fiber laxatives (also referred to as bulk-forming laxatives) add bulk and water to your stool and help move the stool out, thus relieving constipation.

Different products use different fiber

The fiber in many fiber therapy products is psyllium seed husk. As with the fiber supplements, the soluble fiber in psyllium is partly fermented in the large intestine, so it may create excess gas.

And psyllium-based fiber laxatives can thicken and become gritty when mixed with water, one of the most common reasons people don't like using these products. One of the most familiar brand name products containing psyllium is Metamucil®.

A unique fiber in a patented formula

Citrucel's SmartFiber is proven to help restore and maintain regularity and it's the only fiber that won't ferment to cause excess gas.

Methylcellulose is a 100% soluble, non-fermentable fiber made from converted cellulose, an insoluble fiber. Citrucel with SmartFiber acts just like a natural fiber -- giving you the fiber you need without the fiber effects you don't.* It's also non-allergenic and gluten-free.

Find the product that suits you best

We hope that you have found the information about fiber therapy helpful in developing an IBS symptom management program.
