IBS is a common bowel disorder, but not everyone experiences it in the same way.
People have different triggers and signs and symptoms.
The type of IBS a person has is based on the predominant or main symptom they experience.
People with IBS tend to develop a "cluster" of symptoms, but typically one is more bothersome or severe than the rest.
What's your type?
- IBS-C: Constipation is the main symptom.
- IBS-D: Diarrhea is the main symptom.
- IBS with alternating C & D: Both constipation and diarrhea occur, alternating over a period of weeks and months. This occurs over a longer period of time.
- IBS-M: M is for "mixed." Both constipation and diarrhea occur, alternating over a period of hours and days. This occurs over a shorter period of time.
Different people experience different IBS symptoms.
Some may experience constipation and bloating.
Others may have constipation and diarrhea and pain.
Some will have severe and frequent abdominal pain, while others will have mild and intermittent pain.
What’s the plan?
If you're diagnosed with IBS, your doctor can identify which type you have.

What works for one person may not work for another.
That’s why it's important to work closely with your doctor to develop an individualized action plan that's right for you.
